The Grendel Explored

The Grendel has long been a disliked and distrusted being within Creatures 1. Indeed, this negativity has continued throughout the games, painting the picture of a very dangerous breed. Yet, are these claims warranted? Should there constantly be the fear of the Grendel ruining Albia? In short, certainly not. The Grendel may just be the most misunderstood aspect of the Creatures series.

In my unedited world, the Grendel is not a selectable creature. However, that hasn’t stopped me from interacting with him a bit and naming him! He shall always refer to himself as “fig” but I call him Xodin. He found his way across the bridge high atop the trees, and was having quite an enjoyable time playing with a ball and eating all the honey he could get his hands on! Looks can be deceiving: Grendels are not the enemy, but rather, a part of Albia. Blaming them for making the world a dangerous place is as silly as saying that a misbehaving Norn could bring down Albian society forever! Each has an effect, of course, but there are many other factors at play here. Grendels are hardly part of some major conspiracy to take down Albia.

Xodin has similar likes as pretty much any Norn: A bouncing red ball catches his attention and makes him happy, just as a taste of honey satisfies his hunger. Caution should be taken, however, because Grendels are more prone to violence than caring. Does Xodin deserve to be treated meanly? Xodin seems to enjoy watching the seahorse swim about, especially since he always has his trusty ball to play with! I spent a little time teaching him some vocabulary words, although I doubt he will ever make it to the computer to learn his verbs.

Here is a little peek at what else has been going on in Albia… But Xodin and Grendels everywhere deserve the spotlight this evening! Expect to see some more updates on Xodin, and any other C1 Grendels, in the future! They’re just as much a part of Creatures 1 as the Norns. These often take the spotlight, yet Grendels are often misunderstood and disliked based on incorrect information. Let Xodin be an example of how wonderful a Grendel can be!
