Recommended Creatures 1 Add-ons
Written onIn the past, I posted about my main recommendations for COBs and other add-ons for Creatures 1 players. There have been some additional releases since then, along with changes in where some files can be found. The updated list below is far from a complete listing of all C1 COBs! I am notorious for playing with a minimal amount of add-ons, only due to my awful experiences with crashes and lost worlds. Check out Creatures Caves for an excellent selection of Creatures 1 downloads, and everything related to Creatures!
- Creatures Remastered Patch: Essential for properly installing all add-ons.
- Updated C1 Genetics: Makes Norns and Grendels mortal and capable of dying of old age.
- Complete Updated Grendel: Includes updated sprites and body data for the C1 Grendel.
- 24 Creature Incubator Patch: Allows eggs to be hatched in the incubator with a higher population of Norns.
- 24 Creature Population Patch: Allows eggs to hatch naturally with a higher population of Norns.
- Grendel Friendly COB: Overrides the background code so that Grendels can perform friendly interactions.
- Multiple Grendel Button: Makes it possible to cycle through and select any Grendels in the world.
- Grendel Machine Gender Changer: Gives the player the ability to choose the gender of the Grendel.
- Creatures 1 Refrigerator: Creates a reusable source of carrots, cheese, and honey near the incubator.
- Radishes: Injects growing radishes into the garden to provide another reliable food source.
- Jessi’s Food and Plants: Contains multiple sources of food around Albia. (Variations located here.)
- Jessi’s Critters: Contains several unique critters who serve different purposes. (Muggy variation located here.)
Remember that a great deal of the fun with Creatures is enjoying third party add-ons! My only caution is to test out COB combinations in an empty world first, just to make sure there are no conflicts or problems. Making backup copies of a world is also recommended from time to time. I always find it amazing that new ideas are being developed for Creatures 1! Whenever it seems like something is missing from the game, chances are it can be found or created. Maybe there are some new COBs in the making at this very moment…
This links are awesome!!! THanks!!!
You’re very welcome! Next on my list is to provide an updated list of my recommendations for C3/DS, as that post is out-of-date with broken links and is also missing some newer agents. Then there is my project list, which I constantly add new things to. Ha ha!
I just wanted to say that it’s great to have an active Creatures site to visit, particularly C1 and one as informative and interesting as this one. I have just started blogging about my C1 pursuits and look forward to reading more!
Thank you very much! Best of luck blogging: I’ve found that it’s a lot of fun, particularly about Creatures. There’s always something new to discover, and I usually have a good laugh from time to time! If you haven’t already seen it, Creatures Caves is an immensely active part of the community. There’s always something going on over there! Best of luck with your blog, and thank you again for the kind words!
Great list, among my favorites is also the Borg utility ( to enable infinite scrolling, direct injection of individual chemicals, painless grendel selection…) and “the shelf” COB which uses the underground space top left of the incubator as an unlinked room where you can store your precious cheese or other stuff away from norns reach.
Those are some great suggestions! I’ve had some bad luck with COBs causing some issues, so I tend to use as few as possible. Yet there are a lot of really useful ones out there, as well as many fun ones! I don’t think I’ve tried either of the ones mentioned, although I have heard of them. Maybe they’re just another addition to my “Try This!” list!
Which .gen files are which? I’d like to know so I can use the genetics kit to get purebreeds. Also, is the Santa gen file the complete Santa project one or just plain old Santa from ’96?
I’m not sure I understand. The download linked above should include installation instructions for installing all of the .gen files. You can get a purebred Norn with no mutations via the Genetics Kit by opening up a genetic file (i.e. mum1.gen or dad2.gen), checking the box for “Virgin birth (No other parent)” on the export tab, and then laying the egg. There will be no mutations, nor changes from what is loaded in the Genetics Kit.
Also, I’m not sure about your question regarding the Santa .gen file. This only includes the genetics: You still need to install the body data and sprites to see them show up correctly in Creatures 1. If you need links for that, I’m happy to point you in the right direction!
I feel like that wasn’t too helpful, but if you let me know a few more details, I’ll gladly offer better answers! In the very least, I hope some of this gets you on the right track!
You answered my questions just fine :) I also found some stuff out through trial and error. I now have the .gen files renamed by slot and breed type and can get purebreeds of any of the official breeds through the genetics kit. Thanks!
I’m glad you got everything working! And I guess if I ramble on long enough, I spew out some useful information. Ha ha! Enjoy!
