Download the Complete Updated Creatures 1 Grendel
Written onAs promised, this weekend should be an exciting one for Creatures 1 Grendel fans! I am very pleased to present the final version of the updated C1 Grendel, for both males and females. Now both genders can enjoy walking around correctly and having a generally more polished appearance! Not sure what to expect? Have a look at this quick Creatures video to get a better idea of the updates! As always, feel free to contact me with any problems or suggestions. I hope this release will be enjoyed by many! I will be converting these updates for use in C2 and C3/DS in the future. I apologize for taking so long… The little issues cause such big problems sometimes! Have fun with these Grendels, and keep an eye out for more Creatures 1 fixes soon!

All .att files are body data files, and should be placed in the C1 Body Data folder. All .spr files are sprite files, and should be placed in the C1 Images folder. Please be aware that these will overwrite any existing files.
I’ve been waiting a while for this, and I do believe it’s cause for a celebration! Of sorts. That will probably be happening sometime soon.
Anyway. I think that “stutter-step” was actually present with the original, unedited grendel, but I’m not too sure – I remember seeing something like it before installing the updated C1 males, though.
Secondly – do you think you can make a Grorn version of these? The original grorns (made by Lis Morris) still have big females with foot problems and whatnot.
I had you in mind with this release, Grendel Man! I knew you were one of the ones who would be very interested in the updates. I’ll definitely look more into the stutter step before porting this over to C2 and C3/DS. I’m going to be checking the body data to make sure something isn’t attached incorrectly. This might also be an issue with the way gaits/poses are defined at a genetic level: That will be something I’ll be checking, too!
I would be happy to make a Grorn version! I assume this would just involve using the same body data and sprites for Norn breed slot 9? That might actually be a way to see if this stutter step is a body data issue, or if the genetics could have something to do with it… I’ll let everyone test these out for a little longer, but Grorns will certainly be another upcoming release within the next month or so! Thanks for the request!
Congratulations, they look fantastic! And they can move, too! I’ve always assumed the ‘stutter-step’ is just a quirk of the grendel, like the choo-choo or the honey wiggle.
Great job! Maybe when I stop crashing the game with testing COBs I’ll get to see all the life stages of both genders. lol. I honestly didn’t see the “stutter-step” with mine but I did notice how much faster the little guys are now. Going to have to be more careful where the pointer is before I try tickling the flightier ones from now on.
Malkin: Thank you! It looks like that step is just a quirky and unique characteristic of the Grendel. Though it can slow them down a little bit, there are other gaits they utilize, and I haven’t seen one get stuck in place or anything. The only pose missing from the Grendel genome is for laying an egg. I might release an updated genome at some point with this pose and breeding genes… I just realized that my female Grendels pop out eggs unexpectedly because they don’t have a set pose for the action!
Mioonktoo: Thanks! Indeed, you better watch out for these fast little Grendels! Seems like they’re running all over the place, now that they’re able to. It does seem like the position for tickling has changed a bit, so I apologize ahead of time to any Grendels who get inadvertently slapped! One of my test subjects was a perfect example. Oh my!
Hi I installed this update and everything worked out correctly…I think. I ran my game and it seems to run just fine but I didnt notice anything different but I must admitt I have just gotten the game and still have only one norn first generation. Being a newb at this game I do still understand most of the mechanics of the game. My question is about this update. After watching the video I kinda only got that you added female grendels which Im not quite understanding the purpose of that. So can I now breed grendels? And if so can I name them and register thier birth? Do I not have to worry about my norns coming in contact with grendels now? Please help me out asap as I will not go on with the game untill I can understand completely what this update adds to my game. Again sorry im a newb but please explain to me what ive just installed..
Lynx1s: I usually respond to comments as quickly as I can on an almost daily basis. My update simply updates the body data and sprites for the male and female Grendels so that they can move about correctly. In order for them to interact peacefully with your Norns, you will need the Grendel Friendly COB, which is listed as Grendel Good at this link. You may also want to pick up the Grendel Machine from the same link, which allows you to choose whether the Grendel mother lays a male, female, or random egg.
Grendels normally are not breedable: You will need an updated genome, since the original excludes all of the breeding genes. I can make a few suggestions, though you will also need the Genetics Kit or the import feature to have more than one Grendel in the world at once. I also recommend grabbing the Multiple Grendel Button, which allows you to select the Grendels in the world.
Has the C1 Grendel really beaten your Norns to death? There is no mechanism for this to happen in Creatures 1, so I’m curious to hear about this! In over ten years of playing, I’ve never experienced this.
I don’t recognize the issue you mentioned about your Norns sitting and staring into space. These are not the most intelligent beings, though, and getting them to listen is often very difficult when they’re distracted… Kind of like cranky toddlers. Ha ha! You might also want to take a look at Creatures Caves, which is the most active forum in the community. There may be others who have had the same troubles, and can offer some suggestions.
I hope this helps and answers your questions! Good luck!
Hi me again didnt get a response kinda bummed on that and even more bad news this update of yours isnt working for me in the way you say it should. I believe in your video you said the grendels would live with the norns peacefully now but thats not happening at all nor have I seen any more than one grendel at a time. I am quite annoyed with this game there is 0 defense against a grendel and he just sits at my hatchery and beats my norns first to stupidity then to death and there is very quite literally not a darn thing I can do about it. The grendel beat my norn into forgetting his own name ffs. I even feel as though after adding your update it has what seems to me become much harder to teach my norns as they constantly just sit and do nothing staring blankly not even at objects. Just sitting or standing doing nothing and I have to constantly bug them to get them to move which I dont remember having this issue before… I would very much appreciate a response to this I was soo excited when I got this game and now it is very much ruined for me and not because of your update mostly because I cannot even defend against grendel I mean seriously what do I do if he just sits right in front of the hatchery and wont leave and beats my norns to the point they are stupid and wont listen to me anymore what kind of game is that?
well when I say beaten them to death its more like beating them till thier stupid and no longer listening to me and then they just run back and fourth ignoring me while grendel camps at my hatchery eventually leading to them starving and dying Im assuming they die when the starve because I quit apong a severe level of irritation with this game. Like I said they didnt even know thier own name after beaten by the grendel repeatedly. Also I did use the nice grendel cob and it didnt change anything :( I have the injector kit to add items to the game but it doesnt say anything about grendels. So you mentioned the updated genome..would that allow me to choose what kind of species im getting from eggs or what? And could you provide a link for that?
Hi me again so I deleted my comments so you wouldnt have to read everything I wrote. I was having problems because it seemed as though my cob files were not working but I had no idea I had to use the injector to make them work. So now that Ive figure that much out I think you should know that gamewaredevelopment does not host the download for alot of things for c1 anymore including the genetics kit. Please if there is anything you can do to help me get the genetics kit for c1 and c3 I would be soo greatfull. Thanks for taking time to help me I realize im impatient and sometimes grumpy but I really do appreciate your help.
sorry I feel bad posting so much :( I was wondering I have creatures 1 life kit installed and I read on wiki im saposed to have three new kinds of norns and some objects.. well I can see the objects in the injector kit but I dont know how to get the new norns…
Also was wondering if you could tell me which file is asscoiated with the hatchery when you take eggs from it so that I can make a backup of that file incase I run out of eggs and let me explain why.. I know that the emergency kit restocks eggs but mine is not working and actually will screw my game if I try to restock them. If I run out of eggs and ask my emergency kit to restock them it will act as though it has then when im ingame there is still no eggs and when I attempt to try it again it tells me the hatchery must be empty first even though there are none in it. So it would be helpfull to know where that file was so I can make a backup of the hatchery with all its eggs and just add it in when I run out thanks again.
It would probably be easier if you e-mailed me: My e-mail address is listed in the sidebar. That way, you won’t have to worry about posting so much!
Have you installed the Creatures Remastered Patch? This is absolutely essential to get add-ons to work correctly with Creatures: The Albian Years and Creatures Exodus. Once installed, the Injector Kit should allow you to navigate to the folder where your COBs are, which is usually the main Creatures 1 directory.
The updated genomes don’t have anything to do with choosing the species: What I was referring to were Grendel Man’s C1 Breeds, which are unique sorts of Grendels who have the ability to breed.
Gameware still hosts the downloads, but since their domain change over a year ago, the download links have not been updated. Copy the link, and just change the .co.uk to .com, and you should be all set!
The new Norns are in the form of exported Norns that you should be able to find in the main Creatures 1 directory. I believe their names are along the lines of Aaron, Foxy, Sid, and Vixy. I always just create new eggs through the Genetics Kit. It’s quite simply to change the appearance genes and just lay a new egg. In fact, I highly recommend using this method over the Hatchery.
Good luck!
This works like charm! I am getting back into Creatures once again and I simply adore Grendels. There is one issue though that I don’t know that is actually fixable.
Do you have a way of tracking individual Grendels like you do so with Norns. Obviously, when I import a Grendel..it doesn’t show up on the ‘Norn’ list. Do I have to breed two Grendels in order for me to actually own one…? Or is there a add on for it..? I wouldn’t mind the fact that I can’t track them, except that the game only lets me scroll so far..
I’m glad you’re getting back into Creatures, Sara! I recommend picking up the Multiple Grendel Button, which allows you to cycle through your Grendels by clicking it. Grendels never show up in the observation kit, but at least this gives you a way to track them and also use the other kits with them! I wish you all the best: Enjoy those Grendels!
Oh! Thanks a lot! :) I really like your blog a lot even though I might might not comment much. You are the one that has made me get back into it again. It’s really nostalgic to say the least
Thanks so much for the kind words! I always love inspiring people to get back into Creatures, or try it out for the first time. I hope you’re having a great time! To this day, I have yet to find a game as fun and enjoyable as Creatures. One never knows what will happen with these Norns, Grendels, and Ettins!
In Creatures 1, can I name these Grendels I find?
If I download the cob to make them friendly, will they not pass on disease to my Norns?
In order to name the C1 Grendels, you will need to download the Multiple Grendel Selector, which allows you to use all of the kits for each Grendel. Also, Grendels are equally as prone to disease as Norns! There was a nasty rumor started about them in the official documentation to make them seem much scarier than they really are. If a Grendel is ill, he or she has the same chance of spreading a contagious illness as a Norn. However, Grendels are not filled with diseases: They’re mostly just out to spread friendship and love!
I’m having an issue with the baby male sprites. I added the C1 Updated Genomes V2 with the grendel genome, but it did this. 19 minutes old.
Yikes! He certainly doesn’t look put together! This looks like a body data issue, associated with the .att files from the download. Did you install those to the Body Data directory? This might also be a case of a split installation: Check to be sure that there is only one instance of the Creatures 1 directory with the Body Data folder. Sometimes you’ll end up with two, and the game may be picking up the new sprites from one location, but it uses the wrong body data files.
I hope this helps! Feel free to provide any other details if you can’t get this to work, and you’re always welcome to contact me directly. Thanks!
I have a split installation. Does that mean I delete one or I figure out which directory is used by the game for certain things?
I know the sprites and genes are used from one, but apparently the body data isn’t used from that same directory.
The best thing to do (if possible) is to uninstall and reinstall under My Documents. This keeps you from having to guess which folders are actually in use. Alternatively, you can simply copy the contents of one folder into the identical one in the other directory. Then you’ll never be guessing! See if copying over the body data to the other directory fixes your Grendel. And if it helps any, it seems like the baby life stage is working fine, but the body data issue kicks in during childhood. I hope the problem gets fixed up soon!
I guess I need to reinstall after a backup. I have all files in both directories and it’s still happening.
Sometimes existing Creatures don’t immediately use any body data or sprite fixes. You may not need to reinstall, but try creating a new world to see if it happens again. I wish I had a quick step-by-step guide to get things to work! Unfortunately, things can differ by operating system and the way the install goes. Let me know what happens in a brand new world with the updates. Here’s to hoping you end up with a Grendel child who’s properly put together!
