Three Norns and Three Illnesses
Written onNear the Creatures 1 garden, several weeds exist that are generally harmless. When Vanadis started sneezing and coughing near the Baobab, I hardly thought anything of it. Upon closer inspection, however, I noticed that the Baobab was undisturbed. Somehow this young Norn had caught a nasty illness courtesy of antigen 5. With a little attention, a lot of food, and some much needed rest, there was little to worry about in terms of recovery. Vanadis was back to her usual inquisitive self in no time! No more hanging around those sneaky weeds, though… Maybe they had a mind of their own!
With Freya and Vanadis aging nicely and loving everything about the world around them, I knew it was time to introduce a little male into the world of Albia. His untouched egg looked so perfect and safe as the tiny Norn within began to move about and fight his way out of his tiresome shell. I chose his egg at random from the hatchery, and I hoped that my eyes would be met by those of a Brown Mouse Norn. Having all three original breeds as part of the foundation was my goal, even though I was relying mostly on luck! What happened next was a blur, and actually distracted me enough to leave out the first few photos of the first male Norn in Albia. Vanadis and Freya were playing together in the garden. I heard a cough, or perhaps a sneeze. To my dismay, everyone was suffering from an illness caused by antigen 4. Freya’s life force fell to about 55%, while Vanadis showed a decreased life force at about 60%.
Thankfully, Freya, Vanadis, and Dvalin recovered very quickly! Freya was probably the most upset by this occurrence, which absolutely exhausted her. She has even become rebellious, refusing to listen or even communicate with me. She even had the nerve to look at me with a sad face and start dancing over my frustration! Freya is quite the character, to say the very least. Very cheeky, yet she still seemed to understand that I had some part in her full recovery. You’re welcome, Freya.
Not to be forgotten is the male Norn I was hoping for! This is little Odin, named after the major god in Norse mythology. I was too distracted to give him a proper introduction, but he is an absolute charmer. His genetics also possess no mutations, which makes him the perfect candidate as a first generation male. No sooner had I started giving him my undivided attention, when he closed his eyes and ushered forth an enormous sneeze with enough power to send his honey pot flying! Antigen 7 was the culprit of this illness, and I could not help but wonder what the source of these strange sicknesses could be!
Good to see you posting again! :)
Wow, your new world certainly got busy very fast. That’s a lot of diseases in a short period of time! I expect it’s just random, as I don’t think there’s any mechanism to “cause” epidemics in C1, but still.
Also, with my edits of the hatchery genetics, Egg 1 and 4 are Brown Mouse/Banana, Egg 2 & 5 are Pixie and Egg 3 & 6 are Horse. Might be good to know. :)
Hi, Tarlia! Thanks for your support!
I have no idea why I continuously am faced with rampant bacteria and illnesses… I panicked for a few moments at the thought of the first major plague, but I’m very thankful that these sicknesses have been relatively minor. We’ve already gone through about half the antigens out there: Good to know that Freya, Vanadis, Odin, and Dvalin are very resilient, though!
On a quick side note, these illnesses usually are normal and pose no serious threat. In my first C1 world, a good portion of the Norns contracted an illness that was a combination of several antigens and toxins, and was almost impossible to survive. One of the original Norns available for download has a mutation that does not allow him to produce a certain antibody, if my interpretation of his genetics is correct. Not dangerous in itself, a mutation like this can cause a normal illness to be fatal for certain Norns. Not such a simple game when one digs down!
Thanks for the guide to the hatchery genetics, too! I was very happy to find out that all of the first generation Norns are now fully one species, whereas in the past I believe some of them could turn out to be a combination of multiple breeds. I still like to rely on luck and chance, since I oftentimes just pick the prettiest looking egg at that moment. Ha ha!
Gimmie some of those :P For some reason my world seems to have no toxins in it at all as far as bacteria and stuff.. I haven’t been able to figure out why and would love to have some so my norns can build up some immunities.
The original hatchery genetics do indeed have some mixed breeds, specifically egg 4, 5 and 6. 1 is banana, 2 is pixie and 3 is horse, just like with mine, but 4 is banana/pixie, and 5/6 are horse/pixie and horse/banana (can’t remember which is which). :)
Maybe your Norns are just super resistant to everything, Kittie! Do C2 and/or C3 creatures develop actual immunities? I know that Creatures 1 has an almost non-existent immune system, or at least the in-game one is not very realistic. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that even after a Norn fights off a certain antigen, they are not more likely to resist the antigen in the long-term future. Antibody levels also fall, but this might be something I want to look into in more detail. The in-game graphs are quite useful in explaining chemical reactions!
I like to keep mixed breeds for some of the later generations. I’ll be introducing all of the original hatchery Norns into Albia eventually, but “purebred” Norns will most likely be limited to the first generation. It is kind of nice to get a Norn with all of one breed’s characteristics in later generations, though. Makes it seem like everything has come full circle, in a way! Thanks for that great piece of information, Tarlia!
