A Real Time View of the Creatures 1 Norns and Grendel
Written onUp until now, the story of my Creatures 1 Norns has been told through written text and pictures. For a change of pace, I decided to make a short video chronicling their lives in real time! There was a plan in mind, yet the unpredictability of Norns surely got the best of me. Although the video is not as polished as some of the previous videos, I hope it makes for an entertaining experience! Nearly all of the current C1 Norns made at least a short appearance: I believe only Ytteren hid herself from the camera. I will be creating a post with my essential Creatures 1 COBs and additions this week, but please feel free to ask any questions about COBs in the video!
Creatures 1: An Entertaining View of Artificial Life

Norns always choose the moment a camera is on them to develop a fear of food, don’t they? Haha, that was quite cute to watch!
Sometimes it’s hard for me to connect with the norns in your C1 world, mostly because I don’t play C1 and it feels so foreign to me. But I think videos like this help me get a better feel for things. :>
I thoroughly enjoyed watching your video. It was like watching TV! I am a big fan of Live Nornish Action and occasionally will watch it, but yours is better because it has commentary! The way you talk about them always makes them seem so cute.
Hahaha, yep, typical C1 norns. They never do what you want them to. I’ve yelled so much at the screen because of these little things. NO, STOP PUSHING THE LIFT! EAT FOOD! NO, COME BACK HERE. NO, NOT *YOU*! ARGH!
Amaikokonut: I’ll definitely attempt to make more of these videos! I see your point about being able to connect: I’m sure I could write about my Norns for hours, but actually seeing them alive adds a whole lot more. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Kittie: Thank you very much for the kind words! Commentary on LNA would be like a full-time job, I imagine. Ha ha! Even if things go terribly wrong in the future during a video, I’ll probably still keep it: Seems to make everything real, and my apparent perfection during playing gets a little more realistic. Keep an eye out: I hope to feature videos more often now!
Tarlia: My yelling this time was fairly civilized. Ha ha! Although there are so many frustrating things about C1 Norns, they still seem so endearing. And with the joy of raising them from birth, it’s hard to get mad at any of them for ignoring me. They’re Norns, after all! Ha ha! We’ll see if any future videos catch me even more off guard, and spluttering for words!
Yay, unexpected pregnancy! Obviously not something you can plan for, so very cool you managed to catch it. I look forward to your COB post. Hopefully I can pick up a few new ones, although it looks like we share a lot of the same.
I hope to have a couple of posts out this week about my essentials for C1 and C3/DS. In terrible news, I just realized that after painstakingly going through the video, I misspelled the word “artificial” in the title screen. Ha ha! Wow. At least it’s only about five seconds of awfulness… I could have sworn I double-checked everything, but clearly I was wrong! “Artifical” is just an artificial form of the word artificial… Right? I doubt I can talk myself out of that. It just adds to the general comical nature of the video, I suppose!
I noticed you typed the word “Good”, does this praise the norn? Because I know in C3 saying “yes” praises and “no” punishes norns.
Ah, I knew I forgot to mention something! I actually changed the vocabulary in Creatures 1: Rather than teaching “yes” and “no” I use “good” and “bad.” It’s mostly preference, since the sentences that Norns string together seem to make a little more sense to me. Luckily, this change is as easy as updating the learning computer. I believe things can be a bit more difficult to change around in C3/DS. Great question: Thanks for asking!
