Down in the Underground of Chione
Written onThe last remnants of the alpha couple lay with their final clutch of four eggs. The young males had formed a pretty close group, so I was secretly hoping for only one or two little boys. Saysidia popped out of the first egg with an appearance much like her older siblings! Anshou and Ixenba were fairly consistent with passing along their appearance genes. That consistency was about to become even more apparent, though!
Just as Saysidia scampered off to join the rest of the exported Norns, another egg began to stir. This one held Tioja, a bouncy little girl who immediately took a liking to playtime! She was an exact replica of her slightly older sister: Could this be a litter of identical quadruplets? I held off at looking at their genomes for the time being… There were still two more eggs to hatch, possibly with very different Norns inside. Tioja was a bit sad to see her ball taken away as she headed off into the blue beyond of the export folder.
Time felt like a whirlwind with all of these new births! Soon enough, the third egg revealed a very handsome little male named Ulian. Although he was not too much younger than Raefim, his two oldest brothers had already grown into mature youths. That in itself was a bit of an oxymoron… I expected Ulian to fit right in and bond with Raefim, but he preferred the company of Herrim and Iztar. The youngest son of the alpha couple was left to himself in the Norn Meso. He seemed a little lonely, but he never had to fight over food!
Finally, the last egg crackled open to release Vayel, another female. I took the opportunity to check the genetics behind these quadruplets, and I confirmed that they were identical. Perhaps it worked out even better than Ulian was the only male: He might have been confused to see a copy of himself running about! Vayel’s departure solidified the next generation, which consisted of four males and four females. Rather small, but not the end of the world.
Deep in the caverns, I found the eldest of the females, Belisa, all alone. She had no complaints, however! Sometimes the other females could be rather loud, and her cave was much more peaceful without their echos. Oddly enough, Belisa ended up traveling all the way to other side of Chione’s underground passages in record time! I also discovered that she was a rather obsessive eater… One moment a mushroom patch would be there, and the next, it would be safely stored in Belisa’s tummy! Good thing for the Garden Box and an endless supply of food. The others might have starved without its amazing uses!
I came across the other three females in another part of the caves. Felria took it upon herself to adopt Persia and share with her the ways of the world. Kyrena was also helpful, but she had other business to attend to. Amazingly, she suddenly went on a journey to the surface of Chione! She braved the cold air and snow flurries to claim another cavern as her own. Rather clever! Everyone was soon aged enough to start to prepare for the next alpha couple. My picks were Iztar and Kyrena, though there really were no bad choices. Aggressiveness was at an all time low as the males and females prepared to meet.
Tiny generation this time around (and the fact that two of the females are generation 1 norns just makes it feel smaller).
What’s your plan if none of the inferior females in a generation give you females? Just restart from the square one?
The two first generation females initially made me worry about having the genetic line start over, in a sense. However, the alpha male still has strong ties back to the earlier generations, and hopefully Belisa and Felria will ensure the line continues on!
Great question about my plan… I think I had a contingency plan in the past, but since I’ve never had to implement it, I completely forgot about it! I might re-import the same inferior females to give them each one more chance at passing along their genes. I also could consider using some of the females from the alpha couple, but I’m more in favor of genetic diversity. I’ll think on this some more: It’s definitely an issue that could present itself with this next generation! I’m fairly certain I wouldn’t start over completely, though.
