Eggs Suspended in Underwater Time
Written onWhile I was in the midst of making decisions about the aquatic Norn breeds to use in my new Docking Station world, I encountered a rather strange issue! I wrote about how to make Creatures egg hatch underwater, which included a fix for all species. As I was testing out another breed, I discovered that all of my Grendel eggs refused to grow underwater. Oddly enough, any from Muco that had already begun to grow hatched underwater. Yet any natural ones were stuck. Ignore the larger one pictured: That was placed on land to ensure that it would grow somewhere else! It was only underwater that posed a problem.
The Grendel breed in question were the Artemia Grendels, who fit right in with Artemia Sea! The poor father-to-be was very upset over his brood’s lack of growth. I checked and re-checked my DS creatureBreeding.cos file, which was set up properly. The Norn eggs had no trouble underwater. Perhaps it had to do with the usual Creatures 3 creatureBreeding.cos file, which I hadn’t touched or even thought of. In that case, the scripts were slightly different… But probably worth a try! If anyone has any other ideas about what might be going on, feel free to share! I would love to utilize these Grendels in some way, as they add a good deal of interest to the world. Artemia Grendels can also coexist with Norns, unlike another member of this upcoming world…
Did you inject the Grendel Upgrade? That comes with a new script for grendel eggs so the eggs the Banshee Egg Stone lays hatch differently from normal grendel eggs. Unfortunately, this also means it reinstates the bit of code that prevents grendel (and ettin) eggs from hatching underwater.
To fix it, you’ll need to use the CAOs Tool to open up the scriptorium (View -> Scriptorium Viewer window) while the game is running, navigate to script 3 4 0 9, and then comment out that bit again and reinject the script. Or alternatively you could just use the CAOs Command Line and the “ject” command to reinject “DS creatureBreeding.cos” and overwrite the new egg script that way.
Thank you, Grendel Man! That sounds exactly like the solution I needed: Didn’t even remember I injected the Grendel Upgrade, but I know I did. I’m going to have to test this out in a new world, since resetting the COS file seems to remove all eggs, yet I’m pretty sure this will solve everything. I appreciate you sharing this information: It will help me out a lot! I’ll also make sure to mention it in an upcoming update to the COS file I have available for download with the Colortrue Pearl Mermaid Norns.
