I had a brief span of time before I needed to start a constant watch on Henwen’s egg to prevent it from hatching. What was the best way to spend those few minutes? Why, a new Norn seemed like the best idea! Meet Melyngar, the daughter of Bringsli and Ytteren. She is also the half sister of Henwen and Llyan. Though adorable, Melyngar possessed a number of genetic mutations. I should quickly note that I plan on putting together a video to show how I teach my newborn Creatures 1 Norns. Most have turned out decently… Hopefully my method will be helpful!
Chemical receptors define parameters for a certain chemical. When these parameters are met, an element in the Creature is affected. These genes can increase drives, define life stages, control fertility, and more.

A lovely gene that involves the brain! In the standard Norn genome, the tissue is defined as the “Decision o/ps” which can simply be understood as the decision lobe. I was hoping for a better explanation in the Creatures 1 Genetics Kit, and I was rewarded with the following information:
This receptor connects to the Chem0 locus on the Decision Layer lobe. It responds to the presence of the reward chemical and is used by the lobe’s reinforcement rule to cause learning.
In other words, this gene normally recognizes the presence of reward and sends a message to the decision lobe to reinforce good behavior. Melyngar’s mutation means that this signal will be sent to the noun lobe, which is responsible for the storage of learned nouns, and not any decision making. Though it is difficult to define exactly how Melyngar will be affected, it seems clear that she may struggle with making decisions and learning through positive reinforcement. In practice, she refused to eat until I encouraged her with a few slaps. I normally stick with a strong focus on positive reinforcement, but Melyngar’s case is a little out of the ordinary. Fortunately, a few tickles didn’t seem to hinder the learning process!
Chemical emitters define specific conditions within a Creature in order to affect chemicals. Some examples include experiencing stress from excessive drives, becoming cold due to environmental conditions, and more.

This gene should look rather familiar! Llyan inherited the same gene from their father, Bringsli. After a much better explanation from Grendel Man, I learned that this gene increases a Norn’s Need for Pleasure (NFP) while awake, in addition to reducing it while a Norn is asleep. Melyngar’s mutation should make her slightly less receptive to an increase in NFP, though I hesitate to immediately mark this as a good mutation. Without NFP, a Norn might be content without any enjoyment or happiness.
In the midst of my time at the learning computer with Melyngar, my eyes drifted to Angharad’s name in the Observation Kit. She was closing in on eleven hours, and I knew her life was in its twilight. An icon popped up: I expected a death icon, but I was surprised to find out that she and Gurgi had an egg on the way! I left Melyngar for a short time while I ensured that Angharad had a comfortable pregnancy. Gurgi looked just about as surprised as the expectant mother and I!
Kaw grew up into a very pleasant adult, yet I was stunned by his behavior. He encountered Henwen when she was nearing the end of her pregnancy, and he seemed to fall head over heels in love with her! After she laid her egg and took off to take a nap, Kaw decided to play the role of egg guardian. Though the egg needed no heat, nor protection, he stayed close by until I whisked it off to prevent its premature hatching. Kaw and Henwen formed a close bond afterwards, and rarely ventured more than a few steps from one another. They made a very cute and happy couple! Quite a rarity with these polygamous beings.
Thankfully, Angharad laid her egg without any trouble. She set off for the desert island, which made my heart sink a little… Many older Norns had made this final journey before passing away. Fflewddur and Gwydion weren’t about to let one of the most beloved Norns escape for long! They met up with her, and kept her occupied with random conversation and kisses. Like a true lady, Angharad put up with it all and let herself enjoy the unexpected company.
