The Comedy and Irony of Fixing Creatures 1
After a successful reinstallation, I held my breath as I moved files around and prepared to test out my Creatures 1 world. I had backup upon backup, yet it was still possible that something had broken in my world and all would be lost. I had a couple of slight issues with opening up the world file: Make sure to move over all of the Creature genetic and sprite files! Yet after a slightly slow startup, there was Hybralvao! She was the final Norn featured in the last C1 update, and I could only smile over her continued efforts to grow those carrots. Well done, Hybralvao!
I tested out every feature I could think of, just to make sure there weren’t going to be any more problems. Oddly enough, the root cause of the issue was the fact that the file “Creatures.exe” disappeared from my system. Apparently that was the real file the game was trying to locate! Odd, but at least it wasn’t anything beyond repair. As if I needed any irony, Losthrayte decided to work with the forces of Albia to give me the fairly common floating egg glitch!
Although floating eggs are pretty annoying, not to mention unrealistic, the glitch has happened to me many times before without any serious consequences. I had a feeling that I had another little bundle to keep an eye out for, but I couldn’t locate it. Just as the underground cart moved, I spotted the hidden treasure! It was actually a rare Grendel egg, from Dahloi and Nildeleer. At least she had the sense to hide her egg, not send it off into glitch mode! I was thrilled that everything was just as it had been.
Leave it to a group of Norns to put the finishing touches on a return to Albia! I was feeling rather nostalgic and sentimental, and then I witnessed one of those moments that make Creatures 1 the comedy that it often is. Athahain and Brekennion took a journey on the high seas, which promptly tired them out. The boat returned to the island dock with the two sleeping bodies. Losthrayte was absolutely mystified by the sight, while Mayth brought some sneaky levity!
