Norn Naps and the Albian Nighttime
The desert island in my Creatures 1 world was quite the spot for a certain pair of Norns. The last time I visited them, they were setting up a home in the lowest level of the island. It was no surprise to find Pfeffablel and Preetar in the exact same spot! She decided to keep watch over Preetar while he took a nap. As he dreamed away, I wondered whether it was correct to label the island as a desert… It seemed much less arid, and there were several food sources that could grow on it. I caught Pfeffablel laughing at me as I wondered about this useless fact!
I was actually surprised to find Brekennion and Losthrayte back in the garden. Both of them had been on the island not long ago, yet they were happy to make the journey back to the more familiar environment. They adopted a similar sort of relationship, with one watching over the other as she slept. Although it was not obvious, it seemed to be nighttime in Albia! The game actually has an invisible day/night cycle. When a lot of Norns fall asleep around the same time, that usually signifies nighttime. That’s one thing they know that we don’t!
There was no denying what time it was when I found Hybralvao and Thrennion fast asleep! They were very spread out, yet I could understand how Thrennion might want a little space after being hounded for quite some time. Hybralvao was the third rather old Norn in my world. Part of me wanted them all to live forever, although that was impossible. Luckily, everyone had at least one egg and could pass along their genes and be remembered.
And where was the youngest member of Albia? Zelroo was all alone, and loving it! Actually, she wasn’t quite alone since she had a friendly carrot along for the ride. Unfortunately, its demise came quite suddenly when her tummy rumbled just a bit. Farewell, carrot friend! Seven Norns were left in this fifth generation of Norns, and it looked like the population would fall soon. One interesting aspect of Creatures is knowing the approximate time when a Norn will pass away from old age. I certainly wasn’t looking forward to losing anyone, but I felt like I had spent a good bit of time with each of my Norns, and I was ready to let go. So I thought…
